Environmental protection & recycling
Becoming a CO2 neutral company
Alpro aims to have completely CO2 neutral production plants by 2020. We are already on our way, with a reduction of our CO2 emissions by 24% in 07/08.
So far in energy, we have saved the equivalent of the annual consumption of 150 families, and in water, we have saved the annual consumption of 175 families.
We plan to further our annual reductions through greater manufacturing efficiency, by creating our own energy through wind and biomass (soya by-products) power generation, and buying green electricity commercially. And finally, we will compensate for our remaining CO2 emissions.

Recycling
Most of our soya drinks are packed in Tetra Pak® cartons. These not only keep the contents safe, but are hygienic too.
Did you know that one truck can deliver one million 1 litre cartons to us, whereas it would take over fifty trucks to deliver the same amount of glass bottles.
We also make sure that you can recycle as much of our product packaging as possible.
Managed forests
We believe in putting back what we take out. That’s why the wood fibre that goes to make our Tetra Pak®, carton wrap-arounds & trays comes from managed forests. These are forests that are managed in such a way that new trees are planted to replace the ones that have been cut down. So the natural balance of nature isn’t disturbed.
Recyclable materials
- Tetra Pak®
These have the lowest carbon footprint of any rigid beverage packs. This is because Tetra Pak® is made from environmentally friendly materials with no detrimental substances used during the production process. Once you’ve finished your Alpro® soya drink, it is possible to fully recycle the Tetrapaks. Just view their website www.tetrapakrecycling.co.uk to find your local facility, whether that’s kerbside or at your local supermarket or recycling centre.
- Desserts and yogurt pots and sleeves
Could there be such a thing as environmentally friendly plastic? Well we’re doing everything we can to make it happen. We’ve added a recycled wrap-around to our 500g plain yogurt alternative. This has a simple, tear off-line which makes it easy to separate from the pot and it means that we can now make the pot using 20% less plastic.
Our 4x125g yogurt alternatives and desserts also have a 100% recycled wrap-around. This means we can use less plastic in the pot and the protective sleeve can be fully recycled in your cardboard waste.
We’re not stopping here though, with more to do and with your help in recycling we can make our world a better place to live.
The Grocer Gold Awards 2008
It’s great to be recognised for your achievements and even more so when it comes in a prestigious award such as The Grocer Gold Awards 2008. We were successful in winning the “Green Supplier of the Year” award, against such worthy opponents as McCain Foods, Kimberley-Clark, Unilever and even Tetra Pak UK.
The award reflects the fact that, as we have grown from a niche health food brand over the last 30 years to the mainstream brand we are today; we have maintained a green strategy throughout. This is based around sustainability in the countries we source from, including reforestation in Brazil and sustainable organic farming in China.
It also acknowledges that, in 2007, we became the first British food manufacturer to pledge to become carbon neutral by 2020.
